Chicken Math:
Chicken Math
No this doesnt mean your standered text book math, this applies to chickens. Basically, the idea is you start out with a plan to buy three chicks.... then end up with over 20. How in the world did that happen?! This is a very common problem that happens to new and experienced chicken owners. How can you prevent this and keep yourself from having over 100 chickens?
Set a budget
Keeping to a budget can help you be able to have some self-control and only choose the chicks and supplies you really need. Leave your credit or debit card at home and only use cash to pay for them.
Bring a close friend or relative to keep
you in check
Bringing someone who does not own chickens can help you keep you chick count to what you originally planned without going overboard. Additionally, you can choose to let each family member pick 1-2 chicks to keep your flock from getting too big.
Know exactly what you're going to get before
you go
Some stores put out a notice on Social media about what type of chicks and how many they will have a few days before or the day of. You can make a list of which breeds you would like but make a limit for yourself so you will not get too many. Make sure to get to the store early, often if there are rare breeds being sold they will sell out quickly.
Using these tips you can avoid ending up with more chickens in your coop than you need. If you have any more tips you have used to avoid chicken-math or have an experiance to share feel free to comment!
